AVIA shoes

Here’s your delicious A-list of AVIA shoes. AVIA, the leader in endurance sports and a global brand rooted in multisport since 1979, is proud to celebrate a history of creating great shoes for the runner, triathlete, weekend warrior, and endurance enthusiast.

Founded by American entrepreneur Jerry Stubblefield, he reportedly came up with the word “AVIA ” (derived from the Latin term meaning “to fly”) while on a jet flight, and decided to use it as a brand name for a sports shoe to suggest aviation.

As technology advanced, so did AVIA, developing innovative shoe designs that revolutionized athletic shoes. With such designs as the Cantilever Heel, the Anatomical Cradle, and FOM Technology, AVIA proved to be passionate, progressive, and at the top of the game.

AVIA shoes are well-known for performance, durability and comfort. LSU Football coach Les Miles also wears the shoes while on the sideline of every game.

  • History of AVIA. Founded in Oregon, 1979, on a passion to provide shoes for serious athletes, Jerry Stubblefield and his son Don Stubblefield, an engineering graduate from Stanford, developed shoe designs that revolutionized athletic shoes. The father-and-son tandem created designs such as the widely-imitated cantilever sole, which helped make the brand an industry leader. AVIA was acquired by Reebok in 1987, which later sold the brand to the American Sporting Goods Corporation in the mid-to-late 1990s. As a division of American Sporting Goods, AVIA is the leader in endurance sports racing shoes, offering separate brands for runners, triathletes, weekend warriors and endurance enthusiasts. AVIA’s present Sales Manager is former long-distance runner David Edge, who represented Canada at two consecutive Summer Olympics in the men’s marathon. For a company targeting customers who like to hit the ground running, AVIA’s design and sales staff were spending a lot of time in the air. Unlike its competitors, AVIA manufactures its own shoes rather than outsourcing production. That means it can produce samples on the fly and alter designs in progress at the request of its retail outlet customers.
  • Endurance, sports, racing. The 2009 AVIA Performance line is faster than ever with the new AVI-STOLTZ, the first-ever XTERRA specific racing shoes in the AVIA collection, leading the way. The AVI-STOLTZ was co-developed and tested by three-time XTERRA World Champion Conrad Stoltz. The non-traditional trail running shoe can handle all the rigors of off-road racing, is triathlon friendly and race ready. Another fresh introduction for 2009 is the AVI-BOLT II. This high-performance racing flat comes equipped with AVIA’s CANTILEVER technology and the AVI-GRIP quick entry system for faster transitions. A new partnership with Troy Lee Designs (TLD), the California-based company that produces custom graphic designs for the “world’s fastest racers” will debut customized, limited release racing shoes for the second half of the 2009 season. As it AVIA celebrates its 30th Anniversary we look forward to a breakthrough year with Team AVIA and leading the way in performance shoes designed specifically for the needs for the multisport athlete. Today, AVIA continues to lead the performance training movement and further its dedication to endurance sports performance.
  • Sponsorship. AVIA participates in the sponsorship of iconic races including the AVIA Wildflower Triathlons, Vineman and the best athletes around the globe. Team AVIA had an amazing 2008, with season highlights ranging from Eduardo Sturla’s win at Ironman Brazil and top 10 finish in Kona, Heather Wurtele’s win at Ironman Coeur d’Alene, to Wendy Mader’s dream come true as she captured the Overall Female Amateur crown. The LUNA Pro Team upset the XTERRA circuit as Danelle Kabush finished 2nd at the XTERRA World Championships in Maui and would repeat her performance at the XTERRA Trail Run World Championships weeks later. And the list goes on with many more athletes making the podium with impressive professional and age-group wins. 2009 is already off to a great start with additions to the family. As the official shoes of teamTBB, the coaching staff and athletes will work directly with AVIA’s engineering team on innovative product designs. AVIA will also sponsor the newly formed MelRad Racing Team, a new alliance between Conrad Stoltz and Melanie McQuaid, consisting of 20 hand-selected top age-groupers. Additional athletes include Saul Raisin and Pip Taylor.
