Aki Choklat biography. Born in 1963 in Jyväskylä, Finland, at first, Aki Choklat was self taught but then later he learnt the craft idea and the design process from studying at the Royal College of Art. In his thirties, as a sideline to his job at American Express, he got involved with his sisters’ business importing Moroccan clothes and accessories and began updating Moroccan shoes for street wear, making alterations and ordering his own models from Morocco. When people started buying them an Italian manufacturer stopped by and said if he was interested in making them commercially that he could make them with him and that’s were it all started. It was a real ‘baptism of fire’. After a couple of years Aki Choklat moved on to work for a Portuguese shoe factory designing for his first label, Jubaki. Through the success of the Jubaki, he was invited to talk to the students at the RCA which subsequently led to him going back to college. Aki Choklat graduated in 2003 and launched his label under his name and haven’t skipped a season yet.
Aki Choklat for Lahtiset. Internationally recognized Finnish designer Aki Choklat is presenting his first felt collection in 2010 in the Finland Pavilion. In 2009, for the first time ever, Aki Choklat announces a collaborative project with the traditional Finnish felt shoe company Huopaliike Lahtinen Ay. This collection includes Aki Choklat shoes, bags and small accessories offer new shapes and unique, interesting uses for felt. The Aki Choklat for Lahtiset collection will be prominently displayed in the Finland Pavilion’s permanent exhibit of Finnish Design. Over 40 pieces were selected for this exhibition. Some of these will also be featured in the VIP area, and may be purchased from the Pavilion gift shop. Aki Choklat for Lahtiset participated in the 2010 World Expo in China.
