In 2004, distant cousins Franco Gazzani and Lewis Cutillo gave their family shoemaking business a name and stateside distribution. The name Bontoni didn’t exist before 2004. • Handmade Italian shoes. Bontoni’s artisan masters are motivated by a passion for their product, guided by generations of experience, and inspired by their individual creativity. Each shoe requires hundreds of hand-stitches. To achieve the shoe’s precise contour, the calzolaio performs more than 300 tasks, including stitching the leather, molding and tacking the upper onto the last, and compressing the fibers of the leather. The best things in life take time, it takes about twelve weeks to complete a pair of ready-made and five months for a pair of custom shoes. Prices for ready-to-wear start at $1000, while custom prices begin at $3500. Every shoe is crafted using traditional hand tools and carefully preserved techniques.
