Moncler shoes
An evergreen style, which has crossed customs, habits and cultures for over half a century with a single garment, the down jacket, able to change form whilst remaining ever faithful to itself.
- History of Moncler. Founded in 1952 by René Ramillon, genial entrepreneur and manufacturer of mountain articles and author of dozens of patents, sets up the company that will give life to the celebrated down jacket. At the start, Moncler, managed by Andre Vincent, friend of Ramillon and dealer of sports articles in Grenoble. The first down jackets had already been designed in 1954 to shelter workers from the cold, who wore them on top of overalls in the small mountain factory. The first to notice them is Lionel Terray, this French mountain climber asks Ramillon to produce snowsuits, gloves and sleeping bags to provide high resistance and protection for the most extreme climates to use in his own feats. And so, the dedicated “Moncler pour Lional Terray” is designed and produced. Each garment, including the down jackets, is prepared and perfected with the technical expertise of Terray and experimented on the field, during expeditions. Duvet is the key word for Moncler and the secret behind its magic formula. It means feather in French and comes from the south of Brittany and from Perigord.
- The evolution. 1972 is the year of decisive change. The stimulus comes directly from the French team who requests a new variation of the down jacket: no longer in the double version, which still remains in the collection with models like “Karakorum”, but the single garment, decidedly more practical, lighter and suited to competitive needs. Called at the start “Huascaran” and later “Nepal” with the addition of the leather shoulder pads to rest the skis without damaging the fabric, the down jacket in this more functional and comfortable variation is for all practical purposes the forerunner of the current Moncler down jacket and ordains its imminent success. So much that in those years snow tourism explodes, and is destined to become an authentic mass phenomenon. Having become metropolitan, Moncler makes an unstoppable rise to the point that in 1980 it meets stylist, Chantal Thomas, with whom it inaugurates a collaboration that will last until 1989 and radically change its appearance: buttons in places of zips, fur trimmings, satin and reversible fabrics. Most of Moncler shoes cost around $300.
- Transformations. Moncler is purchased by Italian entrepreneur Remo Ruffini in 2003. With a view of incisive development, Ruffini begins the strategy of the global down jacket. Working on wearability and fabrics, the universal soul of Moncler becomes ever more explicit. Its historical roots are retraced, with the intent of enhancing its multiple aspects and different uses, from the mountain to the city, from sports to every moment of daily life. With variations that restore the down jacket to women, it merges the warmth of the padding in decidedly slimmer volumes with maximum attention to quality. In 2006, the Moncler range is completed by a high range women collection, Moncler Gamme Rouge, designed by Alessandra Facchinetti. Identified by the special red label it offers a sophisticated, modern, precious interpretation of the duvet. Since 2008, Giambattista Valli heads the creative direction. The Moncler Gamme Bleu project, a high range man collection, is launched in 2009. Entrusted to designer, Thom Browne, it merges the tailored and sporty look in an innovative way.

From season to season, each garment, revived from the historic archive or created new, is rigorously made in Europe and the down used for the padding is exclusively of French goose feather. Moncler, which uses many tons a year, requires 220 grams for each male jacket, 160 grams for each female jacket, making the feathers one of the principle components of the garment, and the quality of the brand itself depends on their quality.
Before being used the duvet is passed through a rigorous working process that guarantees cleanliness and hygiene through the selection, dusting, washing, disinfection, rinsing, centrifugal and drying phases (in an oven at more than 100 degrees). The distribution network also enhances the transversality of the brand. Today, Moncler is present in the most prestigious stores worldwide and counts many flagship stores. Aside from the Moncler stores situated in the most exclusive ski resorts – St. Moritz, Cortina, Courmayeur, Crans-Sur-Sierre, Megeve, Chamonix, Aspen and Gstaad – since 2007, new flagship stores have been inaugurated in centre of many large metropolis like Paris, Roma, London, Shanghai, Seoul, Osaka, Milan and Hong Kong. From one latitude to the other, Moncler expresses personal individuality beyond styles. It is an icon of the contemporary way of dressing, in ever-new combinations of technology and nature, mountain and city, function and aesthetics.
