If you are out of shape or have weak ankles, you could fall or injure yourself. The first step to take is to strengthen your ankles. Learning to navigate such obstacles is the most difficult part. To run down steps or into a gutter, it is far easier to run on your toes. Lift the heel at least a centimeter above the ground and step down, making sure that you land with your foot in that position. To navigate around an object, simply change direction slightly by pivoting on your heel and continue running. To jump over a small object, land your preferred foot on its toe rather than heel to propel you up and kick your feet back towards your knees. Land with the full sole of each foot, both feet flat. To stop running, do not suddenly put both feet down as this causes damage to your shoe. Gradually slow down your run into a brisk walk, and then stop.

Running in high heels should be avoided at all costs, as it is potentially damaging to your shoe and foot. Don’t attempt to navigate around or over objects or run over uneven surfaces until you feel that you are experienced enough. Remember to hold your head high yet look down often enough not to lose your footing. Keep your posture as you run, but if doing a small jump, don’t try to remain straight-backed and flexed-hands. Practice this first in slow motion and then gradually get faster until you are confident enough with your technique to begin running. Have a copy of your health insurance card with you. This way, if you do fall while running, you will have the information you need to get treated for a sprained ankle or even broken bone.
